Hatcheries do not disagree about one bird; they sell different products. The Normal row is the most realistic starting point for planning. It assumes a healthy first or second year hen from a first-generation blue × dark-brown cross bred for olive shells, on layer feed with natural daylight. About four large eggs a week across the year is the honest planning figure — not a production hybrid’s daily egg, and not Hoover’s commercial prints.
No institution publishes an annual egg figure for Olive Egger. It is a cross, not a breed. We checked and found no Livestock Conservancy breed page, no row in the Conservancy’s Heritage Chicken Breed Comparison Chart (2026) (full-text extract), no Conservation Priority List entry, no APA recognition (Cackle prints “APA: No”; Meyer prints “Not Recognized”), no Rare Breeds Survival Trust page, no Poultry Club of Great Britain page, no Oklahoma State breed page, and no Olive Egger entry in Skinner’s Chicken Breeds and Varieties (A2880). The Low / Normal / High band on this page is ours plus hatchery guidance — the same honesty the Buff Orpington guide uses when institutional counts are missing. Authority here comes from documented shell-colour genetics and from disclosed hatchery products, not from a breed standard.
What arrives in the box — F1, F2, and named hybrids
Olive Egger identity is decided before the formula. Like Blue Andalusian colour genetics, this section decides what the box actually contains — an olive-focused first cross, a later-generation colour project, or a trademarked commercial hybrid — and that decides whether 200 is even the right planning number.
How olive shells form
Brown pigment deposited over a blue shell gives olive; the darker the brown overlay, the deeper the olive (Texas A&M AgriLife — Archer, 2024 and 2025). The blue itself is the oocyan trait: an EAV-HP retroviral insertion in the 5′ flanking region of SLCO1B3 causes ectopic expression in the shell gland (Wang et al., 2013, PLoS Genetics — abstract and full text read on Europe PMC this pass; NCBI PMC can cookie-wall). Poultry Extension (Jacquie Jacob, University of Kentucky) covers the retrovirus story for coloured eggs without treating the birds as GMOs or as sick. Brown shell depth is quantitative — as many as about thirteen genes on the Poultry Extension genetics introduction — which is why olive shade varies hen to hen even inside one hatchery SKU.
F1 — first cross, olive-focused
An F1 Olive Egger is the first generation of a blue-egg parent crossed with a dark-brown-egg parent. Cackle Hatchery’s Olive Egger™ discloses Cream Legbar roosters × Welsummer hens, prints 180–200 eggs per year, and claims about 97% of those hens lay olive eggs. That percentage is a hatchery claim, not an institutional measurement. Meyer Hatchery’s Olive Egger hatching eggs sell F1 programmes aimed at Dark Olive–Light Teal and say breeding the offspring produces F2.
F2 and beyond — a different colour question
Meyer notes that breeding F1 Olive Eggers makes F2 birds whose feather patterns diverge and whose eggs are often a darker olive. Cackle’s F2 Olive Egger™ is a deliberate next step: F1 Olive Egger hens backcrossed to selected Marans, Ameraucana, or Cream Legbar males. Cackle’s own page describes the egg result as a colour basket — brown, green, blue, speckled, olive, dark — not reliable olive, and prints 150–220 eggs per year. That is why our Low of 150 is not “the same olive hen having a bad year.” It is later-generation or mixed-project stock, where both the colour question and the count question have changed.
Who discloses what
Cackle sells F1 and F2 as separate SKUs and explains the difference. Meyer sells F1 hatching eggs and states that breeding them makes F2. Hoover sells named hybrids without F1/F2 labels. That disclosure difference is useful to a buyer before the first egg appears.

A hen lays one egg every 24 to 26 hours at full production and skips days, so the daily average never reaches 1.0. For a backyard Olive Egger, plan on roughly four large eggs a week across the year — a little more in spring and summer, a little less through the shortest days of winter.

Example: 6 hens × 4.3 × 0.84 (Year 2) × 0.75 (winter, no light) = ~16 eggs per week.
Why 4.3 reconciles with Normal. Run a constant peak baseline through a Year-1 season mix — about six months at ×1.00, two fall months at ×0.90, and four winter months at ×0.75 with no supplemental light — and you get roughly 46.8 peak-equivalent weeks. 4.3 × 46.8 = 201.24, which rounds to the Normal figure of ~200. A baseline of 5 would imply about 234 for the year, above Normal with no institutional profile to justify the overshoot. How production drops year over year
Production slides down gradually rather than stopping at a set age. The table applies the age factors to the Normal annual figure of ~200 eggs.

Peak productive life on this page is three to four years — that is the window the stats block means, not lifespan, and it matches the loose-hybrid pattern used for Easter Egger rather than the faster crash of a dedicated production hybrid like the Sapphire Gem. A common approach is adding a young pullet or two every other year, so the flock keeps producing while the older birds slow down.

No institutional climate profile exists for this cross. Our breed data marks climate tolerance as all. The curve below is therefore ours: a modest winter daylight dip for a hardy hybrid, without inventing a breed-page cold failure or a summer trough no source states. December and January are the floor. Broodiness is rare on our breed data, so spring is not carved by sitting spells.

The natural-light column sums to the Normal figure of 200; adding a 16-hour schedule takes it to roughly 220. If you do add light, start in early September before the days shorten, and aim for 14 to 16 total hours rather than leaving a bulb on overnight.
What changes the number
The single biggest lever on an Olive Egger’s annual total is which product you bought, then daylight, age, and feed. Strain language borrowed from purebred guides is less useful here than reading the hatchery SKU.
What you actually bought — different products, not one disagreement
Hatcheries do not disagree about one bird. They sell different crosses and programmes, and the arithmetic shows it.
Our breed data puts Cream Legbar at 200 eggs per year, Ameraucana at 180 (now matching her own guide Normal after re-source), Welsummer at 180, and Marans (Black Copper) at 180. Those are the breed-page figures — not the parent guides’ Normal rows. Cream Legbar, Ameraucana, and Welsummer have all been re-sourced and now match their guides.
- Cackle F1 (Cream Legbar × Welsummer) at 180–200 sits inside that mid-parent envelope. Mid-parent for Legbar × Welsummer on our breed data is (200 + 180) / 2 = 190. Cackle’s printed band contains that mid-parent; its ceiling of 200 sits 10 above it rather than matching it exactly. That is why our Normal is 200 — our breed-page figure and Cackle F1’s ceiling, at the top of the mid-parent envelope rather than at the 190 midpoint. Normal matches Cream Legbar at 200, sits 20 above Ameraucana, and sits 20 above both Welsummer and Marans.
- Hoover’s standard Olive Egger at 260 is a single SKU covering two crosses: Americana × French Cuckoo Marans, and Legbar × Welsummer. One printed number for two crosses. 260 exceeds both parents of either cross on our figures (200 / 180 / 180 / 180). It is not our High.
- Hoover’s Sapphire Olive Egger™ at 290 prints parents undisclosed, sits in the same trademarked Sapphire commercial programme as the Sapphire Gem hybrid we already document, and is not the Gem pedigree. Hoover’s own page says about 5% of hens may lay brown eggs — a checkable brown-escape rate. 290 is not our High either.
Those two Hoover figures would imply out-laying the parents. That claim belongs to those SKUs alone. Hybrid vigour (heterosis) is a real, documented phenomenon for egg number in general poultry genetics literature, and even commercial breeding writeups sometimes invoke it for first crosses — but no cooperative-extension source we opened discusses heterosis for Olive Egger or for backyard coloured-egg crosses specifically. Do not let a real phenomenon launder a hatchery number into the planning band.
Egg colour — planning label, not one shade for life
Our breed data uses the egg-colour value olive green. It is the only breed entry on this site with that enum value, and it is a planning label for a colour class, not a promise of one Pantone. Shade depends on how dark the brown overlay is. Brown pigment can lighten with age and across a laying season; Texas A&M notes that brown-egg hens may lay larger, lighter-coloured eggs as they age while the basic colour class stays the same. Meyer Hatchery’s shell-colour blog says brown eggs tend to lighten as the hen ages and that colour often resets after a molt. F2 and mixed SKUs may lay blue, brown, tan, or speckled instead of olive. Hoover prints a brown-escape chance even on its olive products.
Age at first lay — maturity rating, not a first-egg window
No institutional source publishes an age at first egg for Olive Egger. Meyer’s hatching-egg field is Laying Maturity: 18–23 weeks — the same maturity-versus-first-egg distinction drawn on five guides in this series (a hatchery “weeks to maturity” tile is not a measured first-egg window). Our planning figure of about 18 to 24 weeks keeps Meyer’s floor visible and is labelled ours.
Daylight and winter laying
Hens need about 14 to 16 hours of light to lay at full rate. Expect a real winter dip on natural light. If output drops sharply with no winter, molt, age, or SKU explanation, consult a licensed poultry veterinarian or your local extension service.

The honest verdict: an Olive Egger is the pick when you want a friendly hybrid that lays large olive-class eggs and you are willing to read the SKU. At 200 she matches one blue parent on our breed data — Cream Legbar — and sits 20 above the other blue parent, Ameraucana, as well as 20 above both Welsummer and Marans. She is not a conservation breed, does not breed true for olive, and is not scored by the breed selector quiz — olive folds into the quiz’s “blue or green” option, so a quiz run returns an Easter Egger (or Ameraucana) rather than this cross.
