The Conservancy's own 2026 comparison chart rates the breed Very Good at 200+, and Oklahoma State says around 200 or more. We plan on 150 because it is the only closed institutional figure; 200 is our High, not our Normal. What sets Polish apart is the crest: it decides vision, housing, and winter care more than the Year-1 count does. It can fall over the eyes and impede vision, leaving birds prone to aerial predation and easily startled. The Normal row is the most realistic starting point for planning. It assumes a healthy first or second year hen on layer feed, in a dry, ventilated coop, whose crest is not costing her the laying year through chilling or predation. About three eggs a week across the year is the honest planning figure — not the daily egg a production hybrid will give you, and not the 200+ the chart prints without closing the top.

150 sits below two institutional sources, and that is the finding, not a rounding error. The breed page says about 150. The Conservancy’s own Heritage Chicken Breed Comparison Chart (2026) rates Polish Very Good at 200+, and Oklahoma State says around 200 or more. We take the breed page’s point estimate as Normal because it is the only closed institutional figure and it matches our breed data. The chart and OSU print 200 and then decline to close the top — that sets our High at 200 and forbids 225 or 250, the same call made on Cackle’s open-ended “200+” for Hamburg and the breed page’s “over 200” for Faverolles. A well-bred laying strain may well sit nearer 200. Our Normal is the conservative reading, not the institutional consensus.

For a White-Crested Polish the yearly average is pulled down mainly by which population you bought — crest-first ornamental stock versus a laying strain — and by whether a wet crest or a predator takes weeks out of the year. Why 3.2 reconciles with Normal. Run a constant peak baseline through a Year-1 season mix — about six months at ×1.00, two fall months at ×0.90, and four winter months at ×0.75 with no supplemental light — and you get roughly 46.8 peak-equivalent weeks. 3.2 × 46.8 ≈ 149.76, which rounds to the Normal figure of ~150. A baseline of 4 would imply about 187 for the year, 37 above Normal, and this breed almost never broods, so sitting spells cannot silently absorb the gap. The Conservancy’s late-season start is already inside the 150; do not drop the baseline further to count it twice. Peak productive life on this page is two to three years — that is the window the stats block means, not lifespan. The Conservancy calls Polish persistent layers once they commence; that is a within-season claim, not the multi-year lifetime gift it gives Hamburgs. No source publishes a flatter numeric decline curve, so we keep the site-wide age multipliers. A common approach is adding a young pullet or two every other year, so the flock keeps producing while the older birds slow down.

The Conservancy says Polish tend to begin a bit late in the season, then lay persistently once they commence. That is a calendar trait, not an age-at-first-egg figure. The breed-page wording is “tending to begin a bit late in the season but persistently laying once they commence” — a participial clause, quoted exactly in Sources. January through March sit below a Hamburg-style climb; once she starts, non-sitters do not lose spring to broodiness, so the plateau holds. Winter still cuts on the standard factor — a waterlogged crest is a note, not a custom multiplier.

The natural-light column sums to the Normal figure of 150; adding a 16-hour schedule takes it to roughly 169. That is a real winter lift, smaller than the swing between ornamental stock at 100 and a laying strain at 200. If you do add light, start in early September before the days shorten, and aim for 14 to 16 total hours rather than leaving a bulb on overnight.

What changes the number

The single biggest lever on a White-Crested Polish annual total is which population you bought — crest-first ornamental stock versus a laying strain — followed by whether the crest costs her weeks through chilling, predation, or flock pecking. Broodiness barely registers.

Strain — ornamental versus production, and why Low is not about age

Hoover’s publishes 100 Small White Eggs/Year identically on White Crested Black, Golden, and Buff Laced. That is a deliberate figure, not a typo, and it is our Low. Hoover’s also files the breed under Purpose: Ornamental and calls the eggs Small, against the Conservancy’s Medium to Large. That is evidence of a different population — crest-first, show-bred stock in Year 1 — not a disagreement about the same hen. Age already has its own table above.

The tension is load-bearing and real. Skinner’s Chicken Breeds and Varieties (A2880) lists Use: “A strictly ornamental fowl.” The Conservancy still lists Use: Eggs and Characteristics: Excellent, persistent layers. Mississippi State P3036 files them among egg-laying birds and calls them excellent layers. The 2026 comparison chart Purpose cell is Eggs. No source publishes a numeric production-versus-show split like PoultryKeeper’s Orpington 100 to 180, so we do not manufacture one. The 100-to-200 spread is that split, named by cause rather than invented as two official bands.

Mile Four’s closed 150 to 200 corroborates that 200 exists as a commercial ceiling. It is not load-bearing on its own: hatchery closed tops were refused as Highs on Buff Orpington. The printed 200 on the Conservancy chart and at Oklahoma State, plus the open-ended rule forbidding anything above it, is what sets High.

No variety split

Our slug and display name are a shortening. The APA variety is White-Crested Black Polish, recognised in 1874; “White Crested” also covers White-Crested Blue, added in 1963. The Conservancy’s figures are breed-level and apply across varieties — the same framing used for Salmon Faverolles. In the United Kingdom the Poultry Club of Great Britain standardises the breed as Poland.

Hoover’s 100 is identical across three varieties. Cackle rates White Crested Black, Buff Laced, and Golden all “Good.” McMurray’s adjectives differ — White Crested Black “better,” Buff Laced “good,” White “fair” — and those are ordinal ratings, not counts. Meyer’s weekly peaks differ by product — 2–4 on White Crested Black chicks and White Crested Blue; 3–5 on Buff Laced hatching eggs and White Crested Black bantam — and are weekly, not annual. No institution publishes a variety-specific egg split. Do not invent one — the same call made on Light Sussex, Hamburg, Andalusian, Faverolles, and Orpington.

The crest — every consequence stays with its source

The crest is this breed’s distinguishing management fact. Keep the levels distinct.

Vision, startle, and aerial predation — institutional. The Conservancy breed page says the feathers can fall over the eyes and impede vision, leaving the birds prone to aerial predation; they are easily surprised and a bit nervous. The 2026 comparison chart notes a dense crest that obscures vision, “flighty when disturbed,” and vulnerability to predators. Skinner A2880 and Oklahoma State describe restricted vision and birds that are easily frightened. Mississippi State P3036 is specific about free range: the crest obscures vision, so they are at greater risk of predation, especially from aerial predators, if allowed to free range. That is an extension warning, not hatchery colour.

Talk as you approach — Conservancy, in its own words. “It is best to talk to them when you approach because with their crests, they may not know you are there and fly away.”

Ice in the crest from drinking water — Skinner, copied by Oklahoma State. Ice forming in crests from drinkers is a cold-weather problem those two sources name. It is not Conservancy wording.

Waterlogged crests, frozen feathers, dry ventilated coop — Conservancy breed page. Polish prefer a dry, warm climate and are heat-tolerant with shade. They do not do as well in cold because crests can become waterlogged and chill the bird, and crest feathers can freeze in icy weather. Keep them in a well-ventilated, dry coop. That is breed-specific institutional text, unlike Faverolles, where we refused to import general feathered-leg advice.

Space so birds do not pick crests — Skinner and Oklahoma State. Crest lice — Oklahoma State only. Skinner and OSU both say they need plenty of space to avoid damaging each other’s crests by picking. OSU adds that the crest is also susceptible of lice; Skinner’s Polish paragraph does not.

Elevated brooders — 2026 chart notes. Raising chicks in elevated brooders so they can see human activity better can make them more calm. That is a Conservancy chart note, not an extension bulletin.

Crest trimming — hatchery and keeper practice, not extension. No institutional source recommends trimming. Cackle’s Gail Damerow article says that if birds are not destined for the show circuit, trimming feathers away from the eyes with blunt-tip scissors would be kind and could be life-saving; not every Polish needs it. Meyer says they “may require crest trimming to help them see out from their gorgeous top knot.” Label both as hatchery and keeper practice. They are not an extension finding.

The skull — anatomy versus injury risk, and who says which. The Conservancy describes a bony prominence on the skull that supports the crest. That is anatomy, not a warning. The cerebral-hernia literature is a different class of source: Yoshimura et al. (2012) document cerebral hernia in crested Polish associated with crest formation; Tao et al. in Genes (2020) describe a partially membranous frontal bone, an irregular skull hole, and excessive cerebrospinal-fluid accumulation in crested birds with cerebral hernia. PoultryDVM warns that crested breeds with a vaulted skull can be injured by a single forceful peck, because the brain may be protected by only skin and feathers. Attribute those claims to the papers and the veterinary page, not to the Conservancy or Skinner. No extension source publishes a backyard head-injury warning. McMurray’s own Q&A, answering a customer about cranial hernia and over-selection for crest size, says they do not select for crest size and instead select for vigour, body size, and longevity.

Temperament — leave the field, carry the nuance

Our breed data marks temperament flighty. That field is a housing tag, not a temperament essay, and we are not changing it. The Conservancy’s own sentence is the nuance: “Calm, but flighty when disturbed.” The 2026 chart’s temperament cell says Docile; the same row’s notes say flighty when disturbed. Mississippi State calls them somewhat nervous and flighty. Meyer: Friendly, Flighty. Hoover’s: Gentle, Active, easily surprised. McMurray disposition “better,” free range “poor.” Talk before you touch; they fly; they do not see the fox. Changing the field to docile would file them next to a Cochin. The calm-until-startled reading belongs in this paragraph.

Non-broody — plan to incubate

The Conservancy says Polish hens are non-sitters and rarely will go broody. The 2026 chart lists Non-Setters. Mississippi State: poor mothering instincts, rarely broody. McMurray: not at all likely. Cackle: Non Setters. Meyer: Broody: No. Practical consequence: if you want chicks, use an incubator or a broody of another breed. The upside for egg keepers is that sitting spells almost never remove weeks from the laying year.

Climate — dry and warm, with a hatchery echo

The 2026 chart says they can handle hot and cold, but not extremes. The breed page prefers dry and warm, heat-tolerant with shade, and weaker in wet cold because of the crest. McMurray rates heat excellent / best and cold poor, free range poor. We record climate tolerance as temperate on the breed profile — a compression of the chart’s “not extremes” plus the wet-crest warning, not an invented third climate. Keep the standard winter factor in the formula; put ice and waterlog in the month notes.

Age at first lay — hatchery window, no institutional date

No institutional source publishes an age at first egg for Polish. Meyer publishes Laying Maturity: 20–24 weeks on its White Crested Black page — an actual laying window, which is why the stats block uses 20–24 rather than narrowing it. McMurray lists 20 weeks to maturity, which is a maturity rating, not a first-egg age, the same distinction drawn on Hamburg, Faverolles, Andalusian, and Orpington. The Conservancy’s late-in-the-season line is about the calendar, not weeks from hatch.

Egg colour and size

Eggs are white and medium. The breed page says medium-to-large white; the 2026 chart says White, Medium to Large. McMurray and Cackle say medium. Hoover’s Small is the ornamental-population tell, not our size cell. We keep medium.

Weights, conservation status

Weights are clean across the Conservancy, Skinner, Oklahoma State, McMurray, and Cackle: about 4.5 lb hen and 6 lb rooster. The breed sits at Recovering on the Livestock Conservancy’s 2026 Conservation Priority List (poultry PDF). The breed page and the 2026 comparison chart both say Recovering as well — no document split of the Hamburg/Faverolles kind.

History that still shows up in the yard

Birds that look like Polish appear in Dutch and Italian paintings from the 1400s. Exact origin is unknown; possible routes include Central and Eastern Europe with Asian Mongols, or Spain to Holland in the late sixteenth century. Credit for refining colour patterns and crests goes to Dutch fanciers of the eighteenth century. Known as Poland, Tophat, and Paduan; Darwin classed crested fowl as Polish or Crested. They were popular in France for egg production, arrived in America between 1830 and 1840, and were widespread by 1850. The rise of the Leghorn from the 1850s through the 1890s pushed them into exhibition. The honest verdict: a White-Crested Polish is a light ornamental white-egg layer at about 150 a year — above a Silkie, a little below a Cochin, well below a Hamburg or a Buff Orpington, and not a bird you keep for maximum eggs. What she adds is the crest, a Recovering conservation status worth supporting, and a non-sitting laying year once she commences. She is not a free-range beginner bird, not a mother hen, and not a wet-cold specialist. Hoover’s Hatchery — White Crested Black, Golden, and Buff Laced all publish Purpose: Ornamental, Production: 100 Small White Eggs/Year — the Low, defined as ornamental/show-bred stock. Mile Four — Polish Chickens gives Rate of Lay 150–200, a closed commercial band whose 200 top corroborates High but is not load-bearing alone.

Cerebral hernia in crested Polish is controlled by a single autosomal recessive gene and is closely associated with crest formation. PoultryDVM — Head Injury. Vaulted skull in crested breeds (Polish named); a single forceful peck can injure the brain. No extension source publishes this backyard warning.

  • Ours, not published: the Low / High anchoring choices, the month-by-month split, and the age and season multipliers. The Low of 100 is Hoover’s, defined as ornamental and show-bred, crest-first stock in Year 1 — not age decline, which the year-over-year table already models. The Normal of 150 is the Conservancy breed-page point and our breed data, chosen over the chart’s open-ended 200+ because 150 is the only closed institutional figure. The High of 200 is the printed number on the 2026 chart and at OSU, capped rather than stretched; Mile Four’s 150–200 is hatchery corroboration, not the High’s sole source. The multipliers are our standard site-wide curve. First lay is Meyer hatchery guidance (20–24 weeks laying maturity), not ours and not institutional.

Two classes of source were checked and deliberately not used: aggregator and content-farm breed pages that restate Conservancy or hatchery ranges without primary data, and seller copy that recycles the same figures. For health concerns about your flock, consult a licensed poultry veterinarian.
