No institution publishes an annual egg figure for Orpington. The Livestock Conservancy describes “excellent egg production” and “first-rate layers” without a number; its Heritage Chicken Breed Comparison Chart has no Orpington row because the breed graduated from the Conservation Priority List in 2016. Skinner’s A2880, Oklahoma State, Penn State, and the United Orpington Club likewise give none. The Normal row is the most realistic starting point for planning. It assumes a healthy first or second-year hen on good layer feed, natural daylight, and a couple of broody breaks built into the year. Hoover’s Hatchery lists Production at 220 medium brown eggs a year on its Buff Orpington product page — breed-level hatchery guidance we reuse here because no Lavender-specific annual exists. Meyer Hatchery, the one hatchery selling both Buff and Lavender with a published weekly rate, lists an identical 4–6 eggs per week for both (hatchery guidance, labelled as such — not converted into an invented Lavender annual). Lavender Orpingtons are dual-purpose birds, so they sit a step below dedicated laying breeds, and that is by design.
Broodiness is the swing factor for this breed. A hen that goes broody and is allowed to sit can lose three to five weeks of laying each time. Owners who pull eggs daily and break broody spells early land near the top of the range. Owners who let hens hatch chicks land near the bottom.
Exhibition stock and production stock are not the same bird — and Lavender makes that sharper. PoultryKeeper’s UK Orpington profile lists Uses as Exhibition / ornamental and Eggs at 100 to 180 — the top of that band is our Low, not our Normal. Its history explains why: from the Partington era onward, show breeders selected for size and profuse feather, which paid better than selling eggs. Cackle Hatchery separates production-type from exhibition-type Orpington lines for everyday flock use versus breed-standard appearance. Lavender is a colour-driven, non-standardised variety (see below), so the risk of buying a bird bred for looks rather than lay is higher, not lower. Plan 220 for ordinary hatchery dual-purpose stock; expect the Low when the bird was bred for the colour pen.
There is no Lavender-vs-Buff egg split in institutional sources. The Conservancy and the United Orpington Club treat egg qualities at breed level. The Conservancy singles Buff out for table qualities in the Midwest, not for a higher egg count. Mile Four’s blog claims Buff at 200 to 280 against Lavender at 180 to 220; that is commercial blog material and fails the same test that rejected Cackle’s Light-vs-Speckled Sussex split. Buff Orpington and Lavender share this band.
Lavender is not an APA variety
This is the guide’s load-bearing identity claim — the Andalusian-genetics equivalent for Orpington buyers. It decides what arrives in the box and what “Lavender Orpington” can mean.
Lavender is not an APA-recognised Orpington variety. The American Poultry Association recognises Buff (1902), Black (1905), White (1905), and Blue (1923). That list is confirmed by the Livestock Conservancy’s Orpington breed page, Skinner’s A2880, Oklahoma State, the United Orpington Club’s own breed standard, and Meyer’s Lavender product page, which marks APA Class: English — not a recognized color.
In the UK it is likewise non-standardised. PoultryKeeper lists Lavender among non-standardised Orpington colours, and the United Orpington Club’s UK colour list does not include it.
Consequence for a buyer: show-quality type is not policed for this variety the way it is for Buff or Black. A bird sold as “Lavender Orpington” may be a true Orpington carrying the lavender gene, or a lavender-coloured bird sold under the name with variable type. Meyer labels its birds American strain and marks Hybrid: No — so this is not an ISA-style commercial hybrid, and the guide says that explicitly rather than leaving the reader to assume it. Ask the seller what they select for (type, colour, dual-purpose lay) before you treat any bird as a 220-egg planner.
None of this changes the egg count we plan on. No institutional source reports a Lavender-specific annual figure, and Meyer’s weekly rate matches Buff. Plan the basket on the Orpington band; plan the purchase on the genetics and the APA status.
Genetics — the opposite of Blue Andalusian
Lavender is self-blue: an autosomal recessive (the lav allele, an MLPH mutation per Vaez et al., 2008) that breeds true. Lavender × lavender gives all lavender chicks. That is the mirror image of Blue Andalusian, where blue is incomplete dominance and blue × blue gives roughly 50% blue / 25% black / 25% splash. Meyer’s own Lavender page draws the same contrast — “not like your typical blue chickens” — and the contrast makes both guides clearer. Plan the incubator differently: with Lavender you get a uniform colour hatch; with Blue Andalusian you do not.
Tail-shredder risk — labelled honestly. PoultryKeeper’s colour-genetics article (Grant Brereton) documents ragged tail feathering associated with some lavender lines, and notes the link can be broken by selection. That is a breeder-reported risk in some lines, not an institutional health finding for all Lavender Orpingtons. The MLPH paper describes pigment transport only and makes no such claim; Wikipedia’s lavender-plumage page likewise describes only the colour mechanism. Ask a seller about feather quality in their line if exhibition or photo-ready plumage matters to you; do not treat ragged tails as inevitable for every bird sold under the name.

A hen lays one egg every 24 to 26 hours at full production, and she skips days when an egg cycle runs long, so the daily average never reaches a clean 1.0. The weekly average above folds in molt, broody breaks, and winter, which is why it sits below the 4 to 6 eggs a week a Lavender Orpington hits during her best stretches in spring and early summer (Meyer’s published weekly range for this variety).

Adjust the peak down with the factors below as your hens age and as the seasons turn.

Why 5 reconciles with Normal 220. Run a constant peak baseline through a Year-1 season mix — about six months at ×1.00, two fall months at ×0.90, and four winter months at ×0.75 with no supplemental light — and you get roughly 46.8 peak-equivalent weeks. 5 × 46.8 ≈ 234, a little above Normal. The gap is ordinary broody breaks on a breed that goes broody often: a couple of sitting spells across the year pull the season-weighted total from about 234 down to the Normal planning figure of 220. A no-broody bird on the same light schedule lands nearer High once you also add winter lighting. The age and season multipliers above are our standard curve, applied across the site rather than measured on Lavender Orpingtons specifically.

Lavender Orpingtons are cold-hardy Orpingtons and often keep laying through winter when many breeds quit, but the rate still drops with the short days. Hens need about 14 hours of daylight to hold peak lay — University of Florida IFAS — so output falls as natural day length shrinks toward the winter solstice. If you choose to add supplemental light, start it in early September before the days shorten, add it in the morning, and keep the total around 14 hours rather than leaving a bulb on overnight. Lighting is optional, and giving hens a natural winter rest is a reasonable choice too.
What changes the number
A Lavender Orpington’s yearly total comes down to broodiness, daylight, molt, heat, and feed — and whether the bird was bred for the basket or the colour. Here is how each one moves the count.
Broodiness
Broodiness is the single biggest reason a Lavender Orpington lays fewer eggs than the headline range. Orpingtons have one of the strongest brooding instincts in the backyard world, and many hens want to sit a clutch every spring. A broody hen stops laying while she sits, which runs about 21 days for a full hatch, and she needs more time afterward to come back into lay. Collect eggs daily and lift a broody hen off the nest early if you are not hatching chicks. If you do want chicks, that same instinct makes Orpingtons excellent natural mothers — and with lavender genetics, every chick from a lavender × lavender mating will be lavender.
Show type versus production type — sharper for Lavender
UK exhibition Orpingtons and colour-first Lavender lines often sit near our Low of 180 — the top of PoultryKeeper’s 100 to 180 exhibition band and inside Penn State’s general purebred band of 100 to 180. Cackle’s Orpington pages separate production-type birds (eggs, meat, everyday flock use) from exhibition-type birds (breed-standard appearance). That is a real two-population story, not a disagreement about one number. Because Lavender is not APA-recognised and is sold largely on colour, selection pressure for looks is common. Ask the seller what they select for before you treat a colour bird as a 220-egg planner.
Daylight and winter light
Day length controls laying more than temperature does. Once a hen is in lay, she needs about 14 hours of light a day to keep cycling (University of Florida IFAS — the same threshold the egg production calculator cites), and production tapers as fall and winter cut that short. Orpingtons handle cold well thanks to their dense feathering, so they often outlay other breeds in winter even on natural light. Extending day length toward that 14-hour mark keeps winter numbers up, but it is a tradeoff against the rest a natural break gives the hen.
Annual molt
Most Orpingtons molt once a year, usually in fall, and egg laying pauses for several weeks while they regrow feathers. Feathers are protein-rich, so the molt pulls resources away from eggs. Move hens onto a higher-protein complete feed during the molt to support feather regrowth and a quicker return to lay — a management step, not a published Orpington-specific protein percentage. A clean fall pause is normal and not a cause for concern.
Heat stress
Heavy feathering makes Orpingtons better at handling cold than heat. University of Minnesota Extension puts the poultry thermoneutral zone at about 60 to 75°F, and says birds cut feed intake and production as temperatures climb toward 85°F — the same heat-stress threshold the coop size and water consumption pages use from that publication. In a hot climate, give deep shade, constant cool water, and good airflow through the summer, and avoid letting a hen go broody during a heat wave, since sitting tight for a full hatch in high heat is hard on her.
Feed protein
Feed quality sets the ceiling on how many eggs a hen can produce. Keep laying hens on a complete layer feed at 16 to 18 percent protein (Alabama Cooperative Extension — the same band the feed transition and feed consumption calculators use) with free-choice oyster shell for shell strength, and reserve grower and starter feeds for younger birds before point of lay. Treats and scratch are fine in small amounts, but too many dilute the protein and calcium a layer needs and can leave a large dual-purpose hen carrying extra weight, which itself lowers laying.
Age at first lay — no institutional figure
No extension service, Conservancy page, or club standard publishes an age at first egg for Orpington. Meyer lists laying maturity at 20 to 24 weeks on its Lavender product page — hatchery maturity, not an institutional first-egg date. Content-farm month-count figures are not used here. Our planning window of 18 to 24 weeks is ours, consistent with Meyer’s maturity band and with the Buff Orpington guide, labelled so you can discount it. Some pullets start later than that window, especially birds maturing through the colder months.

The honest verdict: a Lavender Orpington is the right pick if you want Orpington temperament and winter hardiness in a soft self-blue colour that breeds true, at the same 220-egg planning figure as Buff. It is the wrong pick if your only goal is maximum eggs, since a hybrid or a dedicated layer will out-lay it, and it is a riskier show-pen buy than Buff because the APA does not recognise the colour. Many keepers run a mixed flock for exactly this reason, pairing Orpingtons for temperament and winter laying with a high-output breed for volume.
